Look Before You Cross

There is a hierarchy when you're on the streets of this urban jungle.

To suggest that pedestrians have the right of way is criminal, to think it is even ridiculous.

After almost being hit like 500 times, I have it all figured out. Here is the breakdown-

Walking here is almost a death wish. You MUST give way to everyone, no matter what.

A bicycle is second to last....but seems to have the right of way over those on foot.

Next up is the scooter followed closely by the full motorcycle. If you have either of these you're doing better than most and can push some folks around....and you can drive it on the sidewalk.

Last is the car, but the more I'm here the more I understand that it isn't that simple. Within "car" there is a hierarchy as well which goes as follows- cab on bottom, drive your own old car, then drive your own new car, have a driver, and finally have a driver in a Bently.

Literally, if you are higher on the food chain than the person driving in front of you, you just simply cut them off by any means necessary with no regard to safety. Oh, and there is a law in Shanghai that your car can't be more than 10 years old....so when I say "old car" I don't mean that old....

All good. The only things that take some getting used to is that red lights mean nothing and when you have the green light to cross on foot- cars turning right don't stop for a red light or for you. Otherwise, put on your helmet and life preserver on and it is each man for himself.

On another note, it turns out that Top Ramen noodles are the food of choice around here. You can find any flavor at any store anytime. Everyone knew that- right?
Well you didn't know this I bet, take a pack of Chicken Top Ramen and cook it as normal. Once it is done add 1/8th teaspoon sesame oil....all noodles here come with it. That simple addition will make it the best noodles you've ever had!
